DO YOU KNOW HOW TO PURIFY DRINKING WATER?

To purify drinking water use any of the following methods:

1. Boil for 5-10 minutes.

2. Add 10 drops of household bleach solution per gallon of water, mix well and let stand for 30 minutes. A slight smell or taste of chlorine indicates water is good to drink.

3. Add household tincture of iodine in the same manner as bleach above.

4. Use commercial purification tablets such as Halazone or Globaline. Follow package instructions. Learn how to remove the water in the hot water heater and other water supplies.

SMOKE DETECTORS

Install one on every level of your home and in each sleeping area but away from air outlet vents. Install either on the ceiling, at least 6” to 12” inches from the wall, or on the wall, at least 6” to 12” inches down from the ceiling.

Each month test by pushing the test button and vacuum away cob webs and dust.

Replace batteries once yearly. An easy way to remember - change batteries every fall when clocks are changed from daylight savings time.

Replace any smoke detector over 10 years old.

UTILITIES

Locate and teach all responsible family members and neighbors how to shut off the main electric box, water service and propane gas at your home. Keep necessary tools near gas and water shut off valves. Only turn off utilities if you suspect the lines are damaged or if you are instructed to do so by authorities. Remember, you will need a professional to turn back on the gas.

A WORD ABOUT HOME PHONE

Loss of electrical power is common during disasters. Therefore, it is imperative to have a land-line phone to make emergency calls. A land-line phone plugs into the wall phone jack and does not require electricity to operate. Unfortunately, the popular cordless phones are an example of a non-land line phone.

YOUR PETS

When preparing for a disaster remember to include supplies for your pet(s)…
